Blue Moon Waltz "Many people are familiar with the sandhill crane, as flocks of these birds can often be seen in farm fields and flying in the Sugar River watershed landscape. The whooping crane is an unusual sight to behold in this environment, as it is one of the rarest bird species in North America. I have been lucky enough to observe a whooping crane in one of the roadside ditches near the Sugar River several years ago. I have also gone to the International Crane Foundation in Baraboo to observe them. They are protected in Canada, United States, and Mexico. The greatest threat to whooping cranes are man-made: powerlines, illegal hunting, and habitat loss. Public awareness and support are critical to the whooping cranes’ survival as a species. My art depicts a pair of whooping cranes performing their magnificent dance in the light of a super blue moon. They stretch their wings, pump their heads, bow, and leap into the air in a graceful and energetic dance."
